Me:Learning cards

a self-contained card deck to improve your learning

The Me:Learning card deck is a set of critical metacognitive questions about your own learning. You can download a free ready-to-print copy of the card deck and begin straight away. The card deck can be used by learners as well as teachers.

The Me:Learning card deck is:

  • self-contained for individual use: instruction cards are included that explain how it works such that any learner can use it
  • useful for group discussion: you can lay out your current approach and compare with your peer learners to confirm or adjust your ideas
  • helpful to start a conversation between learner and teacher: first pick a card that speaks to you and then explain why
  • freely available for non-commercial use

Every step of learning

The Me:Learning card deck is organised into three phases of learning: before you begin, while you are working, or after you are done. No matter at which point in time you are: there is always a card that can inspire further ideas and actions.

Each Me:Learning card is related to a specific goal within the learning process. There are cards that help to improve the task definition, set goals, activiate prior knowledge and make plans. Other cards help to monitor and regulate learning. The set is completed with cards that aim to improve understanding as well as the learning process itself.

Answers as well as questions

Not every card contains a critical question: there are also strategy cards that provide concrete suggestions for and examples of how you can proceed to learn. These cards clearly indicate when the strategy could be used and how to apply the strategy to learning.

Here, you can download your free copy of the Me:Learning card deck. The download is a ready-to-print but do-it-yourself PDF-file with all cards in English or in Dutch. We recommend supporting your local copy shop and having the cards printed and cut on thick paper of 12x7cm for each card.

Prototyping and testing

a small step can be a big improvement

The Me:Learning card deck was developed by iteratively prototyping and evaluating the cards with focus groups of students. For example, each card was individually read out and discussed to fine-tune the wording and improve understanding While rooted in research, the card are tested in practice.

At first, the card deck was just a hand-written set of index cards -- and look at them now! The development of the cards is an ongoing process: a few cards could be improved by making them more clearly distinct from each other, and in addition to question cards, we would like to eventually add fact cards about effective learning.
